another string

Still working on string quilts. I wanted to experiment with quilting on these, and I had 10 extra blocks from my big string quilt. And so I made 2 more to make this:I think it's going to be another donation quilt. I really like it, but I think it's a neat piece to donate to the silent auction. It's a good baby quilt size, and it would be lovely for a little boy or a little girl. I used straight-line quilting, which is not my favorite, but it worked well here.
I bound it in a red dot, and I used an apple-printed flannel for backing. The quilt itself is so heavy that I didn't use batting. It gives the quilt a slightly different feel, but I think it would be great as a summer baby blankie.
I really enjoyed this project!

2 finishes and 2 days to Christmas!

Finished up 2 quilts in the last 24 hours. Not that I'm cutting it close to Christmas or anything..... Yikes! I still have one more to complete before Christmas Eve.

The first one is my first I-Spy quilt. This one isn't staying with me--it's for my cousin Monica's little girls. Monica participated in the I-Spy swap and then commissioned me to make her quilt. It was a lot of fun!

This is one of my favorite squares--the green with black and white shoes!

For the backing, I used a vintage-y kitchen-y print and a beet print. I LOVE the beets. Not sure why.

This one.... well I'm kind of in love with it. It's a jelly roll... wait, no. It's a honey bun. Moda Oh Cherry Oh! Love it. I did a basketweave pattern and then a border. Backed it with the same pattern as the border. The binding was an unrelated red and white dot.

It's a baby gift for my cousin's little daughter who is 12 weeks old!

finished up this week....

I finished up some small quilts I've been working on this week for a small craft show I'm participating in. I hope these sell, but if not I'll put them on etsy I think!

I like the pink one best. Big surprise there.
These were all improv-y designs. Me and my scrap box getting to know each other.
I really enjoy that kind of sewing.

monkeys finished!

Sock monkeys are finished and delivered. I love how the center section seems to "float" out in the middle part!

I backed it in the red dot.

Mint Chocolate Chip challenge

So a while ago I got an order for a sage green and brown baby quilt. I started from a Michael Miller sage and brown check.

And then I asked my mom to pick up the coordinating dots on a trip to Oklahoma. She was really kind and got me more than I had asked for. Probably because no one was going back to Oklahoma soon and estimating yardage is sometimes not my gift......

I was very thankful and I decided to show my appreciation, I'd be sure to use every single last scrap of it up. So here's what 2 1/2 yards of Michael Miller sage and brown will do!

1. the original quilt. I love it. Zigzags are awesome!

2. Had some leftover blocks from the quilt, so they got transformed into "car seat blankets" That's what I call a blanket that's the right size to use in a car seat but not so big that it falls off or drags the ground. These are quilted and backed in minky. One white, one green. Cause that's what I had around here....

3. Still had scraps. So I made them into 3 loveys. I have a show in a couple weeks, and I think they will be nice to go in it. All the are backed in the rest of my green minky.

So I ended up with one scrap. It's about 2" by 6". I think it's ok to let that one go!

Oh, and my husband thinks all of it looks exactly like mint chocolate chip ice cream......

strawberry fields quilt

Here's my baby's quilt. I love it! It's all nice and washed and crinkly. And she's so adorable playing on it.... she's discovered her toes and that she can roll over. Perfect age to have her quilt finished, don't you think?

hula girls finished up

Here's the finished pictures of my hula girls quilt. I really like this one a lot. The colors are fun, and I like to base a quilt around a really cute novelty print.Can I tell you about who this is going to?

It's the older sister (Angie) of one of my childhood friends, for her baby (who's not quite born yet). Angie was a few years older than us, and she was So Very Cool.

She listened to loud music,

she stayed out late (probably 10:00, but I was little and that was late then...),

she had a hat like Debbie Gibson,

and she had frousy 80's hair in the mid-80's.

She was So Cool.

And it was a joy to make this for her little girl!

This is a quilt for my youngest daughter. It's about 45" square. I'm so in love with the fabric! i have it quilted, but not yet bound..... working on that today!
I think I'm going to bind it in the orange dot. What do you think?

progress on hula girls...

Here's the current state of the hula girl quilt. So pleased with it! I really like it.
Too bad it's monogrammed--I might just decide I couldn't part with it!

Dear friends, I am in a pickle here......

I picked out this Starling fabric months ago for a baby quilt for a dear friend.

{Please Note that friend really likes birds.}

I like it. I've seen it on other things across blogland. Other people like it.

So I've completed the quilt top.....

And now I'm concerned. Do you like it? My husband doesn't. But I do. But I've been staring at it a while..... and I like the birds. He doesn't.

I was planning on binding it in the green print. But I have enough of the starling to bind it as well. I think I'm going to back it in the blue print.

Help! What do you think?

wonky log cabin quilt tops

I know I promised Star Wars pictures... getting to them, I promise. Today I've been playing with wonky log cabins. Love it! Each is about 30-ish inches square, and they are going to make awesome baby quilts.
So if you have never played with wonky log cabins, they are so much fun. I always love to play with black and white. I think a quilt made of squares like this would be great. One huge square based in red, one blue, one yellow, etc. Hmm... like I need another project right now!

quilts over the weekend

I have a craft show coming up in July, and I'm working on getting some quilts done to go in my booth. If they don't sell, they'll show up in my etsy shop after the show.

I was experimenting with finishing on baby quilts. I like the colors of the pink one, but I think I prefer the finishing on the red one. {By the way, it's red in person, but it sure became pink in the photos!}
Here's a closeup of the quilting. Did I mention I LOVE ric rac?

I'd love some input. Which one do you prefer?

2 Ideas cookin'..... need some feedback

Baby quilt? Don't know. I think it could be lovely and bright. What do you guys think?


{It's on the back of my grocery list... and colored with my daughter's washable crayolas, by the way!}

And this one reminds me of what I went to college to learn about {it wasn't sewing and raising kids....}. It's a Fibonacci spiral, but I think it could make a neat quilt. Can anyone direct me to a good tutorial about piecing curves?

Alphabet Quilt finished!

Boy am I excited about this one! It may just be my favorite quilt yet. And it's boxed up ready to go. I'm thinking I need to make another one, maybe in different colors, for my little girl. She loved pointing out the letters she knows.

It's about 36" x 40" and the fabric is Moda wee play. Love that line! The back is a muted blue fabric.
I'm donating it to a golf tournament being held to benefit the education funds for the children of two of my friends who passed away in the last 2 years, leaving very young children behind. Creating it really helped me mourn the loss of my friends.
Isn't it nice how sewing helps that way!

Today's project...

Here's the quilt I was working on today. It's just the top right now, but I'm hoping to get it quilted tomorrow if my babies take naps (at the same time)! I used a charm pack of Moda's wee play line, and I love this quilt! I'll post another picture when it's completed.

I like this one so much. I'm donating it to a charity function in Michigan, but I'm hoping to do more like it to put in my etsy shop.

A teeny quilt

I made this quilt for a friend's niece who was born very prematurely at just 1 pound, 12 ounces. It's tiny! I wanted to dress up her isolette in the NICU.

In an odd twist, about 10 days after I finished this quilt, my daughter was born early, and lived for 2 weeks in the NICU just a few beds down from the sweet baby this quilt was for. I guess we never know what life has in store for us...
